Ten Count BL Anime Faces Cancellation Due to Unresolved Production Issues

The official website for the anime adaptation of Rihito Takarai’s Ten Count boys-love manga made a disheartening announcement on Friday, revealing the cancellation of the highly anticipated anime due to ongoing production challenges.

Initially slated for a television premiere in 2020, the anime faced a series of setbacks, leading to its postponement as the production team reconsidered the series’ development. In a subsequent update in October 2022, the staff revealed plans for a theatrical release in 2023. However, despite these efforts, the anime failed to make its debut last year.

The anime’s director and screenwriter, So Toyama, known for his work on Pokémon movies, had been leading the project alongside character designer Tomomi Shimazaki (Elegant Yokai Apartment Life). Production was in the hands of East Fish Studio and Synergy SP, with Pony Canyon handling distribution.

Ten Count’s narrative follows Shirotani Tadaomi, a company president’s secretary, who encounters Riku Kurose, a counselor. Shirotani’s diagnosis of mysophobia during a counseling session becomes a pivotal point, leading to further exploration of their relationship through subsequent sessions.

Rihito Takarai introduced the manga in Shinshokan’s Dear+ magazine in July 2013, concluding the series in November 2017. The sixth and final volume was released by Viz Media’s SuBLime boys-love imprint in December 2018.

The manga received acclaim, securing the top spot in the Nationwide Bookstore Employees’ Recommended Boys-Love Comics for 2014 and 2015. Despite its popularity, the anime adaptation’s cancellation leaves fans disappointed and eager for further details on the unresolved production issues that led to this unfortunate decision.
